What's a Berean? Check it out. PDF Print E-mail

We get this question from time to time, most often asked by people who are checking out what sort of church Berean is. Actually, "checking out" is exactly the phrase to answer the question, “What’s a Berean?”

The name of our church comes from the Bible, specifically Acts 17:10-12. Paul the apostle, along with his co-worker Silas, had traveled from the town of Thessalonica to the town of Berea (both in modern-day Greece). These men were early pioneers spreading the message of Jesus from place to place, mostly to people hearing it for the first time.

The Bible passage notes that the people in the city of Berea (thus Bereans), upon hearing this new message from Paul, met with him daily and then examined their Bible — which at that time was only the Old Testament — to see if it supported what Paul was teaching. In other words, they "checked out" what the Apostle was saying.

Fast-forward to the 21st century. Today when people look for a church, most people want more than just programs and activities. They want their church to be authentic, with people who believe in something that is real and meaningful, and whose lives reflect what they believe.

If this strikes a chord with you, then we'd like to invite you to "check out" Berean. A good place to begin is this web site. Take a look around. Listen to a sermon, read a blog, and see the opportunities there are to actively serve God. Stop by and take in a Sunday or Wednesday worship time or class, and talk with some of the Berean family.

As you do, whisper a prayer that God will direct you. It is our prayer that you will experience God’s love, grace, and blessing. If you have a question, please ask (use this form). And thanks for checking us out!
